Joanna Horton-Liao studied on-camera acting at the Sally Johnson Studio in New York City and studied and taught the Meisner technique at the Actor's Workshop in Ithaca, NY.
As part of her Shakespeare theatre background, she has studied with Kristin Linklater in vocal techniques and with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in England. Other notable teachers include Jen Krater of Krater Studios in Los Angeles, renowned Shakespeare scholar/actor, Rob Clare, Michael Keck, and Augusto Boal of the Theatre of the Oppressed.
After graduating from Vassar College, she co-founded ROiL, a non-profit theatre for social change company influenced by the Theatre of the Oppressed. The group wrote, toured and performed the original play about the discrimination against gays & lesbians in Maine, "Close to Home" with statewide success. With ROiL, Joanna conducted workshops for teens in lower-income communities in Maine, New York and Louisiana and continued to help develop original work.
Joanna has taught at conferences, schools and studios throughout the East Coast. She makes her home in St. Augustine with her husband, James Liao (pron. lee-OW), whom she met while studying in the same Meisner class.
